Abstract

Saint Paul’s decapitation is about to be carried out, with the apostle kneeling on the ground with his hands tied and his red cloak lowered. The scene takes place near monumental architecture that recalls the hagiographic tradition of martyrdom outside the city. The painter, Luigi Amidani, uses chiaroscuro contrasts and formal stylizations in a Mannerist language that is anachronisti for the Baroque period. The singular coincidence of 1629 sees Amidani disappear from every Italian document and many works of the painter found in Spanish territory, suggesting his collaboration with the Iberian cause.
